This is the fundamental technique used to increase your search engine position for a particular keyword. Search engine spiders follow links from website to website and also pages within your website. You can give these spiders more meaning to what your pages are about by using anchor text to tell them.

The technique of using a keyword as a link instead of a link being just your website address. We can use the anchor text of a link to tell the user and the search engine what the page you are linking to is about.

Example: Instead of linking to your website with www.yourdomain.co.uk we would link with the anchor text A keyword Phrase.

A classic mistake with the anchor text

Using images in your menus to tell the user what pages they link to. The search engines cannot see the text inside an image to determine what the anchor text is.

Now, here is the juicy bit. To increase your search position for a particular keyword you need to follow our advice on previous newsletters. Title, Meta description, Heading and URL structure. Now use the anchor text to link the pages of your website from menus and within content. The real visible search engine position change will come when you use your anchor text in a link from another website, which is relevant to yours.
