Measuring your website goals
Once the goal for our websites have been defined (eg. lead from a contact form, a request for a call back or in the case of an ecommerce site, a sale) we need to measure them. To do this it is highly recommended to set up a google analytics account.
As a base point, we want to see that all our efforts are increasing the number of goals that the website achieves. It is important to understand why we are measuring these goals, it is just as important to understand how the goals have improved. In your analytics account you will be able to set up your goal tracking. In addition you will also be able to identify paths that users followed to achieve the goal giving us information on where drop-outs are. This is known as goal funneling.
So when we have our goals set up, we can then promote the website and see what techniques are working the best and which techniques need more work.
A classic mistake with goal measuring
You should set up your google analytics in your own Google account. This gives you full control over the analytics and will allow you to delegate admin rights to your web company. Often, allowing your web company to set it up on their account makes it difficult for you to keep your statistical data if you swap web companies.
