Social Bookmarking
Social bookmark directories are websites that store and allow users to manage their favourite websites. It is very similar to the favourites in your browser but it is an online version and by allowing others to do the same thing a searchable directory is built.
For each submission you provide a title and description for that particular web page. The title becomes your anchor text for a link to the page you submit. This the keyword we are targeting for improved search engine position as search engines crawl these directories. The description would be a paragraph explaining the site. The social bookmark directory also asks you to tag the website. These are words that describe the site, normally comma separated. It is these tags that form the category structure of the directory, grouping websites with similar tags.
A benefit of social bookmark sites compared to normal directories is that you can build links to pages within your site (deep links) instead of just the homepage. We hear from searchenginewatch.com that this will be an important asset in 2011 for search engine promotion.
There are hundreds of social bookmark sites on the Internet. Some of the big ones include Digg, Stumbleupon, Delicious, Diigo, Reddit. Sign up and get bookmarking.
A classic mistake with social bookmarking
The title of the bookmark will be the keyword, make sure that the keyword you use is also in the title of the page it links to. Not doing so will reduce the relevancy of the link.
